Message from the Chairman

---

Dear Friends and Colleagues of UF Heath Urology,

As we near the 2018 AUA Meeting in San Francisco, I want to extend a personal invitation for you to join us at our annual AUA UroGators Reception to be held at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis (780 Mission Street) on Saturday, 5/19 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

To mention a few highlights of this year, we are currently in the planning phase for our 60th Celebration of the UF Health-Shands Urology Program, which will be held in conjunction with our Visiting Professor Event October 5-6, 2018. We are very excited to have Steve Nakada, MD, chair of urology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, who has kindly agreed to be our guest speaker this year. With the anticipated return of many alumni and former faculty, this combined event will be filled with fun and remembrance of our great history and how far our program has come. The festivities will end with the University of Florida Gator vs. LSU football game and tailgate.

Our department has added three additional advanced practice providers including Rosario Alfaro, ARNP, Hayley Johnson, PA-C and Elizabeth Stacy, PA-C, who in addition to Mitsu Andre, PA-C and Lindsay Rohan, ARNP have done a fantastic job in their patient-centered care and helping to address our ever expanding patient volumes. Our department is very excited to announce the hiring of Chris Bayne, MD as a new pediatric urology faculty member, who will be joining the department in August 2018. Dr. Bayne is completing his fellowship at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. Lastly, we are excited to welcome three new urology residents who will be starting in July 2018 including Kenan Ashouri (Florida Atlantic University), Nikhil Batra (University of Iowa) and Hiroko Miyagi (Ohio State University). With regards to our outgoing chief residents, both Russ Terry, MD and Marla Wardenburg, MD will be moving on to complete minimally invasive surgery fellowships at Duke and Columbia Universities respectively and Paulas Vyas, MD will be joining a community practice in south Florida.

Lastly, our research program continues to thrive with Sergei Kusmartsev, PhD having recently received a $816,000 research grant through the J&E King Florida Biomedical Research Program in support of his study involving tumor-induced tolerance and immune suppression in bladder cancer along with co-investigators Paul Crispen, MD and Paul Dominguez, PhD. In addition, I want to congratulate one of our bright UF medical students, Vincent Roth (Class of 2021) who was selected for the 2018 AUA Summer Medical Student Fellowship Program. He will be studying UTI rates following office cystoscopy in urology patients at the Malcom Randall VA Hospital and will be mentored by Benjy Canales, MD

Taken together, it has been another exciting and successful year at UF Health Urology.

It's great to be a UroGator!
